The Curse of Knowledge
Lately, I've been a tad hesitant about putting my stuff out there, specifically my writings. It's because I've assumed that what I have to say is probably common knowledge. But then, I stumbled upon this article that cleared my doubts, and I just had to share an excerpt with you all.
"People often say 'knowledge is power.' But what happens when we all have different levels of knowledge?
The 'curse of knowledge,' or 'the curse of expertise,' is a cognitive bias where we incorrectly assume that everyone knows as much as we do on a given topic. When we know something, it can be hard to imagine what it would be like not knowing that piece of information. In turn, this makes it difficult to share our knowledge because we struggle to understand the other party’s state of mind." Source: The Decision Lab
You know, this bias also pops up when I'm reading a book or listening to a podcast. Sometimes, the author or host repeats a story they've already told before, and I'm like, "Why do they keep saying this again and again?" But then I have to remind myself that while I know this stuff, there's someone out there who's hearing it for the very first time and could be blown away by it.
We all likely have some incredible knowledge and advice to share, things that seem painfully obvious to us, even in areas where we're no experts.
So, to whoever is reading this right now, go ahead and share your wisdom. Keep in mind that the person on the other side of the table might be hearing about your insights for the very first time.
